April 9, 2013 - M+W Group has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the largest photovoltaic power plant in Israel with a 55 megawatt/peak output. This also includes commissioning and maintenance. Client and shareholder in the project is Enlight Renewable Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of Eurocom Group. This free-field project will be a milestone for renewable energies in Israel and contribute significantly to preserving the country's energy mix.

The construction site of the PV power plant, which is being realized in close cooperation between the two M+W subsidiaries M+W Israel and M+W Solar is located nearby Moshav Ohad, some 100 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. Over a total surface area of 1,000,000 sqm, a plant with more than 180,000 crystalline PV modules and 60 central inverters will be installed over the next 18 months. The annually generated electricity of approximately 118,250 megawatthours will be supplied to the high-voltage grid of Israel Electric Corporation (IEC), for which a separate 22/161 kV substation will be set up. During the operating phase M+W Israel will also be responsible for the maintenance of the plant.

One particular challenge with this project in desert-like conditions is the use of a single-axis horizontally simulated tracking system that makes it possible to optimize yield, while minimizing installation and operating costs. The tracker systems continually track the position of the sun throughout the day, which will increase the energy yield by up to 25 percent. In addition, the design enables a correlated, optimized energy generation during the course of the day according to the consumption profile typical of the country.
