Standard Solar, Inc. and Choptank Electric Cooperative, Inc. recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a new solar project.

The 503 kilowatt, 1,596 panel system, being built by Standard Solar, is expected to produce 706 megawatt hours per year. Being built on a 1.2 acre field, the array will provide electricity for Choptank Electric Cooperative's Regional Service Center which hosts operations serving members on Maryland's lower Eastern Shore.

"We are extremely satisfied with this new facility and how it will provide better service to our southern territory members," said Olin Davis, board chairman of Choptank Electric, during a formal dedication of the new service center on Aug. 23.

The solar project and other energy efficient technologies will assist the Cooperative in achieving LEED Silver Certification for its new building.

"We applaud this great effort by our partner Choptank Electric Cooperative to pursue clean energy to power their new facility," Tony Clifford, Chief Development Officer for Standard Solar.

The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2017.
